Every beat maker in the world is starting to catch onto the fact that they might actually be able to create income by selling beats online, beat selling is getting easier as more and more producers learn how to sell beats online. More websites are popping up every day for producer’s trying to sell their instrumentals, and I use many of them to this day to sell my beats online.
MySpace and Soundclick are both widely used by producers on a mainstream scale. There are huge numbers of producers on those two sites alone competing to license their beats off to hip hop artists with low budgets.
I wrote this article in order to help my readers fully understand selling beats on the internet and how it’s done. I want to start at square one.
First of all, no producer in their right mind is going to feel good about putting huge amounts of funds into a website if they have no idea what they’re doing. Start small and work your way up. There are plenty of forms of free advertising. SEO, forum and article marketing are all included.
Arbitrary beat selling sites including RocBattle and MyBeatShop may seem like the right place to start, but in reality I tend to disagree with that idea. Those websites are built for producers to battle and showcase their talent, so the entire website consists of mostly producers (if not all). This means that you’re music will be listened to by producers more than any other type of person. You want rappers to hear your stuff, and though many rappers do check out RocBattle looking for beats, it’s not enough to be noteworthy.
Soundclick.com is my personal recommendation for any producer trying to get their foot in the door. Its absolutely free to sign up and start promoting (though upgrading to their VIP membership is a smart idea, ALL the top dogs on Soundclick have a VIP account and it’s very inexpensive). The coolest thing about Soundclick is that your target audience is already there! SC has over 1.4 million rappers signed up! That’s a huge data base of hip hop artists and all of them need beats!
I love MySpace as well because it reminds me of deep space. You’re so far away from everything it feels empty! I mean that rappers all over MySpace are lost in the midst of millions of people, so most of them have no idea where to find beats. There is no “producer” section on this site, so if you can find rappers then they’re most likely interested!
